Pedro Martinez takes his World Series ring and heads to the Big Apple Dec 07, 2005
By Lawrance M. Bernabo Pedro Martinez was a member of the inaugural MLB Series 1 set of baseball figures from McFarlane Toys, along with the likes of Ichiro, Albert Pujols, and Randy Johnson. That figure showed Martinez pitching for the Boston Red Sox and although his hair was rather short he did have the top couple of buttons on his jersey undone, which made it look different from other figures in a decidedly good way. Now here we are all the way up to MLB Series 13 and the three-time Cy Young Award winner finally gets his second figure. Unlike the other position players who can be shown at bat, in the field, or even running bases, you can really only show pitchers pitching. This second Martinez figure, showing him as a member of the New York Mets, actually shows him a bit earlier in delivering the ball to the plate and you can see more of his distinguishing ringlets. The sculpt of Pedro's face on this six-inch figure is pretty good too and the way his eyes are homing in on his target is a nice feature as well.
Martinez was 15-8 with a 2.82 E.R.A. and 208 strikeouts in his first season back in the National League. In his fourteen year career he has amassed a 197-84 win-loss record which works out to a .701 winning percentage. He has only won 20 games twice but then he has only reached 10 losses twice as well and his career E.R.A. is only 2.72, which is impressive in this day and age when if you win half your games and your E.R.A. is under 4.00 you can earn big bucks. That is why Martinez signed a four-year $54 million contract with the Mets as their general manager, Omar Minaya, began seriously upgrading the franchise. Last year they added Martinez and Carlos Beltran through free agency and before baseball's winter meetings in the off-season he traded for Carlos Delgado and Paul Lo Duca, taking advantage of the latest Florida Marlins fire sale. So Pedro is now the number one starter on the team that has to be favored to win the National League East (hey, some year Atlanta has to finish out of fist place, it could happen).
The MLB Series 13 is an Extended Edition, which simply means that McFarlane Toys decided in Spring Training to come up with figures with their new teams. So in addition to Pedro there is a second edition figure of Larry Walker as a St. Louis Cardinal, a third edition figure of Randy Johnson as a New York Yankee, and the first figure for Moises Alou as a San Francisco Giant, but notice he is catching a ball in front of the ivy covered left field wall in Wrigley Field, where Alou played previously as a Chicago Cub. This is a nice idea because when a player moves to a new team that opens up a new market and apparently McFarlane wants to do more than dress up old figures in new jerseys (which they have done successfully on several occasions: I believe you can get the same Roger Clemens figure in four different uniforms). Hopefully we can look forward to another Extended Edition next year (MLB Series 16 or 17?).
