 The Pitching Coach's View May 16, 2012

I grew up in Detroit & this season, of course, was a special one for me as a fan. I found this to be an enjoyable book. Craig's point of view as the pitching coach dominates the storyline. Probably 90% of the baseball discussion is about the pitchers. If you're wanting to read about Whitaker & Trammell, Parrish & Gibby, you might be disappointed. Don't let that stop you - this is a fine read.

Honestly, it's probably better than Sparky Anderson's book. It's basically a day-by-day journal during the season. Anderson's book got more pub and is better known, but this is a pretty solid book. If you missed 1984 and want to relive a little bit of the season from a coach's perspective, it's a decent read and a reasonably quick read.
If you have Anderson's book, you'll like this one.
If you are not a Tiger fan, I'd probably pass.

I liked this book a lot more that Sparkey's book. Living out here in Washington in 1984 I missed a lot of what was going on--only what was on ESPN and CNN and a couple lines about each game. Sometimes I'd be lucky to see the Tigers on TV. This book helped me to understand what really went on. As I read the book it seemed as if I was going through the season all over.
