26 Games of my life Jun 02, 2011

In the Game of my life Author Matt Johanson discusses 26 players single games performances of the San Francisco Giants.
Starting when the Giants moved to San Francisco up to 2007 Johanson talks about some of the greatest individual performances in games in Giants history and with each game the readers gets commentary from the player who is the center of attention.
The reader gets comments from some of the greatest players in Giants history like Willie Mays to Felipe Alou to some lesser known players like Ed Halicki (threw the last Giants no hitter at Candlestick park) to Rich Aurilia, Bob Brenley and even Brian Dallimore (his first hit major league hit was a grand slam) Any fan of the Giants will remember the names and the games however Johanson takes the reader inside the game with the situation and the player. Johanson also covers some of the ancillary facts and anecdotes leading up the the game. With some players he talks about a specific at bat especially in the case of Brian Dallimore. Some players Johanson talks about an entire game but only briefly. There are only about seven or eight pages dedicated to each game or at bat. I would like to have seen longer pieces when Johanson talks about a game especially with Halicki's no hitter. Missing from the book though is Juan Marichal's sixteen inning master piece against Warren Spahn that ended on May's home run 1-0. Also missing are Gaylord Perry's 1968 and John Montefusco's 1976 no hitters. One of the things I appreciated is that johanson gives the reader a short biography about the player and statistical information on the player for the game being described.
I think that Giants fans from 1970 on will recognize the names and enjoy reading about the games they heard about or saw as kids. Having been a life long Giants fan I have attended a couple of these games and heard or saw most of the rest on radio or tv.
Over all I rate this book at 4 stars it's short comings are the lack of detail when it comes to the no hitters mostly I think because there are 26 Games of my life discussed in just 222 pages. None the less a good read. The writing style is outstanding, I just wish there had been a little more of it in some cases.
